The upside to spending an inordinate amount of time at home due to the pandemic is that many people have had the opportunity to get creative in the kitchen. And now, at-home chefs have a unique opportunity to take their skills to the next level with virtual cooking classes courtesy of AirBnb, taught by award-winning chefs like David Chang.
“As a chef, we connect with our guests through our food, but we don’t often have the chance to share and explore the stories behind dishes with diners directly,” the Momofuku founder said in a press release. “These Online Experiences give us the opportunity to do that, while paving the way for chefs from around the world to connect with guests virtually from afar.” Chang’s class is called “One-Pot Deliciousness,” and will teach guests his favorite recipe for Chicken and Rice Donabe with ingredients that are accessible and flavorful.
Other top chefs involved in the initiative include Edward Lee, the author of Smoke & Pickles and Buttermilk Graffiti and the chef and owner of restaurants 610 Magnolia and Whiskey Dry in Louisville, Kentucky. His course, “Summer Grilling Experience,” will revolve around how to prepare bourbon-infused BBQ recipes. Chef Claudette Zepeda, the executive chef behind El Jardín in San Diego, will teach a class about how to make Cauliflower Torta Tacos, and Rōze Traore, a chef mental health advocate and two-time open-heart surgery survivor, not to mention part-time model, will lead a lesson all about his “Favorite Summer Recipes,” with a focus on how different flavors mix and mingle with one another and with suggested beverages.
Proceeds from Chang’s, Lee’s, and Zepeda’s classes will benefit Lee’s LEE Initiative Restaurant Reboot Relief Program, which aims to help restaurants reopen after COVID-19 and to help small farmers; proceeds from Traore’s class will benefit Harboring Hearts.
Other Online Cooking Experiences will include classes with chefs Roberto Ruiz (“Modern Mexican Cuisine”), Jun Lee (“Contemporary Seoul Cuisine”), Nicola Dinato (“First Course Flavors”), Soo Ahn (“Food Pairings”), Paolo Gramaglia (“Southern Italian Dishes”), Cristina Bowman (“Roman Haute Cuisine”), and more.
